Christian recording artist Brandon Heath chuckles when you point out that most of his songs have the word “love” somewhere in the lyrics. While he insists his songs are about God, he’s open to leaving it up to interpretation. “We were made to love,” he says.
“Love God?” I ask. “Or your girlfriend?”
“Take it how you want to take it,” he says with a grin.
True to form, his first single from his newly released album “Leaving Eden” is “Your Love,” a song that has spent six straight weeks atop Billboard’s National Christian Audience radio chart, and also spent a week at number one on iTunes Christian Albums Chart.
Heath says this new album is driven by a yearning for innocence amid a news cycle laden with seemingly endless bad news. A self-professed news junkie, he’s trying to ignore the news more these days.
“I’m trying to dial that back a little bit, and maybe not being so deep into current events, and being in my own space and my own time and being satisfied with that rather than knowing what’s going on in the world stage,” he says.
Heath, 32, has twice won the GMA Dove Award for Male Vocalist of the year and has been nominated for two Grammy Awards. He says he keeps his Dove Awards in a closet, and is driven less by the adulation and even material success he’s achieved than by a desire to inject hope into what he sees as a broken world.
“I’m a little more optimistic I think than most people are,” he says. “I don’t believe that we are supposed to be negative. I think we pick up where we dropped everything and we move forward.”
