NEWS: Artist wants Jesus Popsicles to stand as statement on fanaticism, violence

By Eliott C. McLaughlin, CNN

(CNN)–Sebastian Errazuriz has used art to take on an array of issues: New York’s death rate, the Occupy movement, military suicide, children with disabilities, the brutal reign of Chilean dictator Augusto Pinochet. Now, the Brooklyn-based artist is taking aim at what he sees as religious extremism.

At a party this weekend celebrating New York Design Week, which begins today, the Chilean-born artist plans to hand out 100 “Christian Popsicles” made of “frozen holy wine transformed into the blood of Christ” and featuring a crucifix instead the tongue depressor that typically hosts the frozen treats, he said.

An image of Jesus Christ positioned traditionally on the cross is visible once the ice pop is consumed. As for the frozen wine, Errazuriz said, he concealed it in a cooler and took it into a church, where it was “inadvertently blessed by the priest while turning wine into the blood of Christ during the Eucharist.”

Errazuriz will hand out the wine creations on Saturday at Gallery R’Pure in Manhattan’s Flatiron District before the “Love It or Leave it” exhibit.

According to Gallery R’Pure, 10 artists are taking part in the exhibit, which asks attendees “to revisit the objects and symbols that have forged the American landscape through the eyes of their creators.”

CNN’s Belief Blog: The faith angles behind the biggest stories

“Each piece is a personal interpretation of some aspect of American life, be it celebratory, critical or simply observational. The exhibition intends to question what the American life is, whether real or perceived,” according to a news release from the gallery.

Other installments include a briefcase used to address obesity in America, a white picket fence intended as a statement on the American Dream and a “MTA chair” representing the loss of New York’s old wooden subway benches.

While many of the pieces are provocative, none is quite so controversial as Jesus on a Popsicle stick. No stranger to controversy, Errazuriz said his intention isn’t to upset people.

“It’s not that I purposely want to get in trouble. I just believe if you are not doing work that can make people stop, think and discuss, then it’s better not to make any work at all,” he said.

Once consumed, the Popsicle features Jesus positioned traditionally on the cross.

Raised in a Catholic household, Errazuriz is now a “practicing atheist,” but he has many friends and family members who are religious, and he respects their beliefs. He has always been vexed by religion, however, particularly the practitioners who wish to force their beliefs on others.

“(I’m) more than happy to recommend that thinking for ourselves and questioning the realities we received from previous generations can be incredibly liberating,” he said.

Today, he feels that America is growing more extreme in its dogma, which is “holding a growing influence over American politics.” He is especially unnerved by demands that U.S. leaders “publicly profess their faith in their god and enforce laws that defend the ideology of the Bible over individual liberties,” he said.

His frozen cocktails stand as a symbol, he said, an invitation to “drink the Kool-Aid” that he feels so many religious zealots are stirring up. He hopes the Popsicles will remind the gallery’s visitors to take their religions – whatever they may be – a little less seriously.

The United States is “rightly worried” about the threat of Islamic fanaticism, but Errazuriz wants to remind people that extremism is never acceptable, regardless of religion.

“In the land of the free, it’s everyone’s responsibility to make sure no one will ever force their beliefs on to others,” Errazuriz said.

He pointed to the Ku Klux Klan, which decades ago was “a functioning, dominant political force in American society which identified (itself) as a Christian organization, carrying out ‘God’s work,’ branding the flaming cross as (its) symbol,” he said.

Errazuriz wants his “Christian Popsicles,” which will be stained red by the wine after their consumption, to signify the relationship between fanaticism and historic religious violence.

He also has hopes that the sticks “will prove Christians can take a little humor and irony – always a healthy indicator that might be harder to find amongst religious fanatics of other religions.”

NEWS: Most popular baby names have biblical origins
By Elizabeth Tenety

The list of the country’s most popular baby names for 2011, released Tuesday by the Social Security Administration, revealed that for new parents, God is in.

Among the top 10 names for baby boys, four are biblical. For girls, variations on biblical names were also popular, with Isabella (the Spanish version of Elizabeth, John the Baptist’s mother) Ava (a variation on Eve) and Abigail (an Old Testament character) making the top 10.

The Old Testament remains as a source of inspiration for parents today. (Karen Bleier – AFP/Getty Images) What is it that compels 21st century parents to name their kids after an Old Testament patriarch (in the case of Jacob) or the man credited with saving creation (thanks, Noah!) during the Great Flood?

Laura Wattenberg, creator of the Web site babynamewizard.com, told the Associated Press that it was the retro vibe of Hebrew Bible that appeals to parents today:

“The traditional biblical names were New Testament names — John, James and Mary and Elizabeth. . . . Today, the hot names are all names from the Old testament precisely because they were neglected for so many generations.”

The top 10 names for boys in 2011:

1. Jacob

2. Mason

3. William

4. Jayden

5. Noah

6. Michael

7. Ethan

8. Alexander

9. Aiden

10. Daniel

Matthew, a disciple and also the author of a Gospel, and Elijah, an Old Testament prophet, come in at 12 and 13.

The top 10 names for girls:

1. Sophia (a religious term for wisdom )

2. Isabella

3. Emma

4. Olivia

5. Ava

6. Emily

7. Abigail

8. Madison

9. Mia

10. Chloe

NEWS: MTV pulls the plug on reality show about people losing their virginity

NEWS: MTV pulls the plug on reality show about people losing their virginity
  • virgin-mtv-660.jpg

The network that brought us “Jersey Shore” and “Teen Mom” was prepping to lower the bar a little bit more, posting a casting notice this month seeking people 18 years or older who would “candidly allow MTV to accompany you on the journey toward ‘losing it’.”

And by “it” they meant “your virginity.”

“Do you want to take things to the next level? Like, are you ready to hand over your V card? Or do you have a friend who is ready to lose it? Young adulthood is a time for exploration. New relationships, fresh experiences and sexual firsts,” read the casting notice. “Now MTV is looking to frankly capture that journey in a new series called My First. We’re looking for adults who are ready to go all the way. Let MTV come along on your journey… as you try to lose your virginity!”

The network went on to note that they would not “film the act itself. Duh.” They also said they would be filming regardless of whether one went through with the deed.

Not surprisingly, the fame-for-sex casting call was met with outrage across the webosphere with many tweeting things like, “just when I thought MTV couldn’t stoop lower than ‘Jersey Shore,’ and ‘one more reason I am glad we canceled our cable a year ago.’ It even caught the eye of actress Patricia Heaton, who called it “so incredibly depressing.”

However, it seems the negative response prompted the folks at MTV to quickly squash the project. We noticed that although the casting notice wasn’t due to close for applications until May 28, it had already been disabled.

“This was a preliminary casting notice, and we’re not moving forward with a pilot,” a rep from the network told FOX411’s Pop Tarts column.

But the mere notion that fifteen minutes of fame and a fat paycheck was being advertised in exchange for “trying” to lose your virginity is pretty hard for many parents and media experts to stomach.

“Viacom, which owns MTV as well as BET, Nickelodeon and more, should be ashamed that its company is pandering to the gutter,” said Dan Gainor, VP at the Media Research Center. “This is part of the media attempt to mock people who have morals and to treat virginity like a disease that must be cured. Network programmers won’t be satisfied until they are able to hold live gladiatorial combat on air with the audience voting on whether the loser gets to live.”

According to Nicole Clark, author and director of the documentary “Cover Girl Culture,” MTV will simply do anything to lure audiences.

“Adults know how strongly girls/boys desire attention and recognition. Offering fame to girls willing to lose their virginity is only going to encourage girls to participate, without considering the repercussions to their future or mental health,” she said. “It’s irresponsible.”

NEWS: TBN extravagance? Read internal memos for yourself and decide

NEWS: TBN extravagance? Read internal memos for yourself and decide

(SOURCE)  Orange County Register

We’ve been telling you about the charges leveled by the granddaughter of Trinity Broadcasting Network’s Paul and Jan Crouch, who accused the world’s largest Christian broadcaster of playing fast and loose with the ministry’s millions – and then provided internal documents to back up her claims.

Trinity accused her of the true financial misdeeds, called her assertions nonsense, and tried to keep the internal documents she possessed under wraps. They were stolen, and may have been altered, Trinity says.

We’ve been bringing you stories based on Brittany Koper‘s 180-page declaration (Confidential memo: ‘TBN practices … violate the IRS Code’ and Extravagant spending a pervasive issue for Trinity, internal review says) for the past few days, but we hadn’t posted the full Koper document, as it’s quite large.

There have been repeated requests for it from various corners over the past week, and so, after wrestling with Adobe Acrobat and WordPress, we’ve broken it into pieces. You can read the documents yourself by clicking on the links below (and if you don’t see the document on the first try, hit “reload,” and that usually does the trick):

  • Pages 1-34 from Brittany Koper Declaration
  • Pages 35-69 from Brittany Koper Declaration
  • Pages from Pages 70-104 from Brittany Koper Declaration
  • Pages 105-130 from Brittany Koper Declaration
  • Pages 131- 157 from Brittany Koper Declaration
  • Pages 158-180 from Brittany Koper Declaration

There  have been a great deal of jaw-dropping allegations in suits related to this one, including that Trinity purchased a $50 million jet through “a sham loan to an alter ego corporation” for the personal use of the Crouches; a $100,000 motor home purchased by Trinity as a mobile residence for Jan Crouch’s dogs; “multiple residential estates” falsely reported as guest homes or church parsonages to avoid income disclosures;  meal expenses of up to ahalf-million dollars per company director; “personal chauffeurs compensated with Trinity funds under the guise of medical payments;” and “multiple cover-ups of sexual and criminal scandals.” (Details in Suit: ‘Cover-ups of sexual and criminal scandals’ at TBN)

Koper also accused the world’s largest Christian broadcaster of unlawfully distributing charitable assets worth more than $50 million to the company’s directors.

Trinity Christian Center, which does business as TBN,  is a nonprofit in the eyes of Uncle Sam, which means it doesn’t pay taxes on its income. It reported

  • revenues of $175.6 million (including donor contributions of $92.5 million),
  • expenses of $193.7 million,
  • and net assets of $827.6 million at the end of 2010, according to its tax returns.
  • Its highest-paid officer was Paul Crouch, with compensation of $400,000.

Losing its tax-exempt status has been the big concern voiced in the documents Koper furnished — which could cost Trinity tens of millions of dollars each year if it came to pass.

Jan Crouch has called TBN Jesus’ TV station, and thanked its donors for keeping it on the air.

NEWS: Recent Christian convert, Kim Kardashian Stopping Kanye West From Seeing Other Women on Tour?

By Christine Thomasos , Christian Post Reporter

Kim Kardashian, 31, reportedly kept her 34-year-old boyfriend and music mogul Kanye West from spending too much time with other women for his 10-day “Watch The Throne” tour.

Kardashian joined West and Jay-Z on the London stop of their tour of the United Kingdom where she reportedly stopped him from speaking to other women. The reality television star reportedly became upset with her boyfriend after he started spending time with other people, according to British tabloid The Sun.

“Kim was all over Kanye at the start, but when he started to mix with other people she had a stern word and took him away from the party,” a source reportedly told The Sun.

However, the publication claimed that West obliged his girlfriend without any issues.

“He followed her orders with minimum fuss,” the publication claimed. “He knows the deal.”

However, MTV UK reported that Kardashian was also selective about which women were allowed backstage at his show.

“Kanye has a load of girls he’s friends with. Most are stylists or from the fashion set but Kim’s not happy about them being alone with him backstage,” The Sun reported. “She sees how well he gets on with girls because of his sensitive side and has decided to rein in the entourage a bit. Kim is trying to put a stop to this as she doesn’t want to look or feel awkward at any point.”

West and Kardashian’s relationship will reportedly unfold in front of television cameras for her show “Keeping Up With the Kardashians.” The season seven premiere of the television show took place on Sunday, and the reality television star’s family came together to bond in different circumstances.

While Kardashian recently admitted that West would be on this season of her E! network show, she said there would be limitations to what the public sees about her relationship.

“My heart’s a little more guarded,” Kardashian told E!. “I showed so much of myself in the past. You almost get embarrassed showing this big wedding, which I would have had cameras or not. So I think you want to just guard yourself.”

NEWS: 3 Charged in Marvin Winans Carjacking Case

NEWS: 3 Charged in Marvin Winans Carjacking Case

Prosecutors charged three men Sunday in relation to the robbery and carjacking of minister and Grammy Award-winning singer the Rev. Marvin Winans.

The suspects were identified as Montoya Givens, Christopher Moorehead, both 20, and Brian K. Young, 18, according to The Associated Press.

While Givens and Moorehead are residents of Detroit, Young is from Macomb County’s Clinton Township. The three, who appeared in Detroit’s 36th District Court Sunday, were charged with carjacking, unarmed robbery and conspiracy.

“This is just an example of the diligence that our officers put forth when investigating criminal cases,” police chief Ralph Godbee said in a statement.

Winans, the pastor of the 4,500-member Perfecting Church, was assaulted last Wednesday when he pulled into a Citgo gas station in Detroit, Mich., to refuel his SUV. “I’m just saddened that it has come to this,” Winans said after the incident. “This kind of nonsense just has to stop. It’s just the savageness of what’s happening in the street.”

The court will decide June 1 if there’s enough evidence against the suspects for the case to go to trial.

Winans’ black SUV was recovered last Thursday. The 54-year-old minister, who delivered Whitney Houston’s eulogy in February, lost his $15,000 Rolex watch, iPhone, briefcase and wallet containing $200.

“I was putting my gas in the tank and turned around to face them,” Winans was quoted as saying Thursday. He was soon engaged in casual conversation with three or four young men and became distracted when one of them said his gas was overflowing. “When I looked down, one stepped in and hit me from behind. They pulled me on the ground, and they were kicking me and kicking me. Someone grabbed the car and went. I remember throwing a punch and missing.”

Winans says the attack has brought his attention to the change the city needs. “The city is fixable, and it starts with the men of the city, in particular the black men,” he was quoted as telling reporters before delivering Sunday’s sermon. “And I … want to urge all of you men who hear me to go and get your sons. I’m not bitter. I’m not upset. I’m saddened by what has taken place. But I’m also inspired. We have to make a change in this city.”

NEWS: ROBIN GIBB FROM THE BEE GEES HAS DIES AT AGE 62

Bee Gees’ singer Robin Gibb has died following a lengthy battle with cancer, his family have said.

British-born Gibb, 62, had been battling colon and liver cancer.

Gibb’s musical career began when he formed the Bee Gees with his brothers Barry and Maurice in 1958.

The group is among the biggest-selling groups of all time with hits spanning six decades including Stayin’ Alive, How Deep Is Your Love, Massachusetts and Night Fever.

In a statement, Gibb’s family said they were announcing his death with “great sadness”.

Broadcaster Paul Gambaccini described Gibb as “one of the major figures in the history of British music”.

‘Monumental accomplishments’

“Everyone should be aware that the Bee Gees are second only to Lennon and McCartney as the most successful songwriting unit in British popular music,” he said.

“Their accomplishments have been monumental.

“Not only have they written their own number one hits, but they wrote huge hit records for Barbra Streisand, Diana Ross, Dionne Warwick, Celine Dion, Destiny’s Child, Dolly Parton and Kenny Rogers, the list goes on and on.

“What must also be said is Robin had one of the best white soul voices ever. He was singing lead on his first number one when he was 17, that was Massachusetts.”

Gibb’s family said in a statement: “The family of Robin Gibb, of the Bee Gees, announce with great sadness that Robin passed away today following his long battle with cancer and intestinal surgery.

“The family have asked that their privacy is respected at this very difficult time.”

NEWS: Florida ‘Apostle’ Arrested in Child Sex-Trafficking Scheme

The FBI on Thursday arrested a Florida minister for having inappropriate contact with underage girls.

Luis Morales, a 57-year-old evangelist, was arrested at his Ormond Beach home on Thursday. Morales faces five counts of transportation of a minor with intent to engage in sexual activity. Rebecca Rivera, who was also arrested, was charged in two of those accounts, according to the federal indictment.

Amy Filjones, a spokeswoman for the U.S. Attorneys’ Office, told the Daytona News Journal that prosecutors believe Morales traveled across state lines with at least six children and molested them.

Morales runs En Fuego for Jesus, which bills itself as a five-fold ministry. (En Fuego for Jesus translates as On Fire for Jesus.) He goes by the moniker “Apostle Tito” and his wife is known as “Prophet Linda.” Rivera is also named as a prophet on the ministry website.

“You need to repent. Get right with Jesus,” Linda Morales said to the parents of her husband’s alleged victims before the bond hearing, according to News4Jax.com. “Satan is the accuser of the brethren. So anybody that makes an accusation against a man or woman of God is on Satan’s team.”

NEWS VIDEO: Texas Teacher Tells Her Students She is Jesus’ Wife (watch Hidden Video)

A Spanish teacher at a public high school near Harlingen has been replaced in the classroom after subjecting students to a lengthy religious discussion, telling them Jesus fathered a child with Mary Magdalene, she herself had a special relationship with God and the apocalypse is coming.

The San Benito woman’s “DaVinci Code”-style rant began in English and switched to Spanish in a 12-minute clip a student recorded on a cell phone and posted on YouTube, the Houston Press reported.

The teacher has not been named by the school, citing the incident as a personnel matter, but the district released a statement saying she was escorted out of the classroom once students alerted the administration of what was going on and will not teach for the rest of the year, The San Benito News said.

The outburst, her second, begins with a non-canonical (many Christians would say heretical) account of Jesus’ romantic relationship with Mary Magdalene, a close follower of Jesus who appears in Bible narratives.

The teacher goes on to tell her class she is the reincarnated Mary Magdalene, married to God and also pregnant.

She was quoted as saying, “I am married to God, and I don’t know what’s going to happen to my husband that’s here (on earth). One of my eyes is mine and the other one belongs to God, so God is watching what you all are doing.”

She warns students that the world will end this year in December and describes how the world will end. From the Houston Press:

She said that an army of God was coming to destroy this world on December 21, 2012, but not to worry, because Jesus had created another planet that was more beautiful than this one, a Utopia full of waterfalls where everybody was always 25 years old, where money does not exist, but Christmas does, complete with Santa Claus.

Generally, to avoid favoring a particular religious tradition or pushing personal preferences on students, public school teachers may not espouse their own religious beliefs in the classroom. Most schools do allow teachers to participate in voluntary student organizations that may meet before or after school to pray or talk about faith.

NEWS: Greg Laurie’s Upcoming Sermon Traces Disciple Peter’s Footsteps in Jerusalem

NEWS: Greg Laurie’s Upcoming Sermon Traces Disciple Peter’s Footsteps in Jerusalem

Evangelist Greg Laurie can be seen tracing the steps of the disciple Peter in his upcoming sermon filmed in Jerusalem that will be shown to his church in Southern California and webcast to a global online audience during worship services this Sunday.

“Greg traces Peter’s story from the Shepherd’s fields to Jerusalem and the site that many believe to be the house of Caiaphas where Jesus was detained on the night of his arrest,” said John Collins, executive director of Harvest Ministries, to The Christian Post. Collins along with Harvest’s tech team viewed the video from Israel on Thursday.

“On that site, Greg tells the story of Peter’s denial before the rooster crowed.

“He then continues it at the Garden tomb, the possible sight of Jesus’ resurrection, and where Peter’s hope was renewed. The message concludes with footage from the Sea of Galilee where Peter was re-commissioned by Jesus.”

In addition to evangelizing at large stadium events known as the Harvest Crusades each year, Laurie pastors Harvest Riverside and Harvest Orange County churches. It is only the second time in Harvest history that a full message designed for a Sunday church sermon will be given by Laurie via video filmed in Israel.

“It’s a compelling story about Peter anyway, but to be able to stand on the probable sites the events occurred – it all really comes to life. That’s the benefit of being able to be there and be able to describe it,” Collins said.

The webcast of the message will be available at Harvest.org and shown at 9:30 and 11:30 a.m. Pacific Daylight Time.

“I hope people all over will check it out because it will really bring Peter’s story to light and also really give hope and encouragement when anyone falls or if they ever had an incident in their life where they know they’ve not pleased God with their actions … and then know they can be forgiven as Peter was,” Collins said.

Those watching will be viewing “a fascinating journey,” he explained. “If you can’t get to Jerusalem, hearing a message from there will be the next best thing.”

Four video clips from Laurie’s recent trip to Israel that was also part of Holy Land tour he led can be viewed on his blog here.

Laurie also gave blog updates about his trip, that included touring with 300 people. In a post from last week, he wrote, “Hey all, Having a great time in Israel. We went to Caesarea today, where the Roman Centurion Cornelius lived. It was here that Simon Peter preached the gospel to this searching man who had not found the answers in the dead paganism of the day. Peter came to his home, preached the gospel, and the rest is history.”
