NEWS: Drag Queens create “spoof music video” Targeting Chick-Fil-a and Christians

by Billy Hallowell

Chick-Fil-A is a company known for its delicious food and quality service. But in gay rights circles, the famed fast food chain is regularly dubbed discriminatory and bigoted. Much of the criticism has come from the company’s financial support for causes that tout traditional marriage. Now, drag queens are taking the Christian-owned company to task with a spoof on Wilson Phillips’ “Hold On.”

The song, called “Chow Down,” comes complete with a music video that takes aim at the company’s purported anti-gay stance. In it, three men dress to look like the band’s group members (Chynna Phillips, Carnie Wilson and Wendy Wilson).

The lyrics, of course, have been changed to say things like, “Please don’t sue us for libel, We just want meat without your Bible“ and ”Someday somebody’s gonna make you wanna gobble up a waffle fry, But no go, don’t you know, Chick-Fil-A say you make the baby Jesus cry.”

In this new, destined-to-go-viral video by current RuPaul’s Drag Race contestant Willam Belli, Willam, Detox, and Vicky Vox address one of the fundamental dilemmas of our era: Chick-fil-A is so delicious, but it’s owned by right-wing Bible-thumping bigots. What to do?

In a music video parody of Wilson Phillips’ “Hold On,” Willam, Detox and Vicky play their roles perfectly (just check out Willam’sChynna Phillips head-shaking impression at 1:47) to get across the message: “Chow down at Chick-fil-A (Even if you’re gay).

NEWS VIDEO:Christian Contestant Ignores American Idol Producers, Says ‘God, Use Me’ on Live TV

As NewsBusters reported last Friday, the producers of the hit show American Idol warned contestant Colton Dixon to tone down his overtly Christian references if he wanted to win the competition.

Dixon clearly didn’t heed their advice, for after his incredible performance of Billy Joel’s “Piano Man” Wednesday, he told host Ryan Seacrest, “I’ve been praying before this whole thing because tonight was a big moment for me, and I was just collecting myself and saying, ‘God, use me.’ I want Him to shine through first and foremost.” (Video follows with commentary.)

Here’s what Dixon told Today.com last week:

“When we first started the Twitter and Facebook stuff, they said beware of political and religious tweets,” he told TODAY.com. “Just because it can turn off voters or whatever. But, you know, being a Christian is who I am. It is a part of me musically. It is what I want to do after the show — go into Christian music.” [...]

“I am not going to hide it, and I am not going to stray away from it just because I am on a TV show.” [...]

“I wake up and I do devotional every morning,” he added. “It reminds me why I am here, which is to share the love of God. I know there are several other contestants who can say the exact same thing. But it is a part of me and I want to share it — no matter what, good or bad outcome. It is me.”

NEWS VIDEO: Rev. Al Sharpton wants Justice for Trayvon Martin: Heads to Florida to Protest

NEWS VIDEO: Rev. Al Sharpton wants Justice for Trayvon Martin: Heads to Florida to Protest
Rev. Al Sharpton wants Justice for Trayvon Martin: Heads to Florida to Protest

The case of a 17 year black boy who was gunned-down holding candy and ice-tea is causing up-rage in the black community and is receiving wide-spread coverage in the national media.  Trayvon Martin lost his life for apparently ‘looking suspicious’ to neighborhood watchman George Zimmerman.

Rev. Al Sharpton sees the importance of this case and is heading to Florida to stage a rally.  ”I wait for an era when young black men will no longer have to live in fear. Decades after the abolishment of slavery, we were haunted by the reality of being hunted down, beaten and lynched by both everyday citizens and law enforcement,” says Sharpton. The following statements were also expressed by the activist.  Young boys like Emmett Till were openly and viciously murdered because of the sentiments of bigoted individuals who believed they had the right to carry out their own brand of injustice.

Today, black (and Latino youth as well) are routinely targeted, profiled and ‘mistakenly’ shot by those sworn to serve and protect us (i.e. Sean Bell).

And now, in what can only be described as the most blatant form of vigilante murder, a 17-year-old named Trayvon Martin loses his life at the hands of a self-proclaimed ‘crime stopper’. But the only crime here is that this killer ended poor Trayvon’s life under the guise of his own preconceptions and has not been charged, nor arrested. We will head to Florida to ensure that all that changes immediately.

On Thursday, March 22 at 7 PM, National Action Network (NAN) and I will convene an urgent rally at the First Shiloh Baptist Church in Sanford, FL. to demand justice for Trayvon Martin. We will be joined by community leaders and concerned citizens, from all ethnicities, backgrounds and walks of life, who cannot even begin to comprehend this nightmarish situation.

A young teenager walking home, armed only with candy and a drink, should never lose his/her life because someone in a gated community feels “threatened.”

George Zimmerman, the accused adult shooter, is roaming the earth freely while Trayvon’s mother, father and family members must bury their precious child.

It is an atrocious miscarriage of justice, and we demand that authorities in Florida arrest Zimmerman immediately and charge him for the crime of murder. Anyone with sound reasoning cannot disagree.

In 2005, the state of Florida enacted one of the toughest ‘stand your ground’ self-defense laws which allowed civilians to use deadly force against ‘intruders’ or anyone they believed was a ‘threat’ to their life. Supported — and in many ways lobbied — by the National Rifle Association, these laws don’t even require a person to retreat from the situation, thereby allowing them to pursue someone who “threatens” them.

The legislation not only protects individuals from prosecution, but goes so far as barring them from civil suits in many cases as well. As the model for dozens of other states that now carry similar laws, the Florida self-defense rule creates an environment where anyone, at any moment, can claim they were fearful of someone as a justification for cold-blooded murder. And that’s exactly what we see here in the tragic case of Trayvon Martin.

In the recently released 911 tapes of that fateful day, Zimmerman was clearly told to stand down by authorities, but he didn’t comply. Many eyewitnesses said they heard screams of help, but no one came to Trayvon’s assistance in time to save his life. Zimmerman claimed he had spotted a ‘suspicious’ individual, and, as several news outlets have reported, he pursued Trayvon, not the other way around.

In a society that still views young men of color as threatening, dangerous and suspicious without cause, these self-defense laws in Florida and elsewhere give free range for anyone to openly kill those that they may not like or those that make them feel uncomfortable because of their own inherent prejudices. And the race/ethnicity of Zimmerman or any citizen in this type of scenario doesn’t matter, because at the end of the day, it is the race of the victim — Trayvon — that does matter. It is his race and his demographic that is consistently depicted as the threat and negatively portrayed in popular culture.

A few years ago, a man in Oklahoma City shot and killed a 16-year-old who allegedly tried to rob the drugstore where he worked. This pharmacist attempted to plea self-defense, but because he shot the teenager in the head, chased someone else out and returned to shoot the kid five more times as he lay the floor, he was sentenced to first-degree murder.

Young Trayvon’s only crime was buying a pack of Skittles and walking through the wrong neighborhood. He had his entire life ahead of him, and we demand justice without delay. Zimmerman must be held accountable.

Join us in Sanford on Thursday as we call for a repeal to Florida’s outrageous self-defense laws. It’s about Trayvon’s life, not supposed self-defense.

I’m still waiting for the day that young black men (and women) can walk freely in any neighborhood without fearing for their lives.

NEWS VIDEO: Kirk Cameron Defends Comments on Homosexuality: ‘I Hate No One’
By Katherine Weber , Christian Post Reporter

On the “TODAY” show Tuesday morning, actor and devout Christian Kirk Cameron defended his recent comments on homosexuality, saying he was not a bully, as some critics have claimed. The evangelist insisted that he loves all people.

When asked by NBC host Ann Curry if he is guilty of hate speech for calling homosexuality “destructive,” Cameron said, “Absolutely not. Of course not. I love all people. I hate no one.”

The long-time actor was on the show to promote his upcoming documentary “Monumental.” But the first question he was asked was regarding the debate he sparked over comments he made during a March 2 interview on CNN’s “Piers Morgan Tonight.”

In the earlier interview, Morgan asked Cameron about his views on homosexuality. Cameron said he believes homosexuality is “unnatural … I think that it’s detrimental, and ultimately destructive to so many of the foundations of civilization.”

Cameron soon received a stern rebuking from the LGBT community for his comments, including the Gay and Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation (GLAAD), who called his views “outrageous.”

He argued on Tuesday that his comments did not condone bullying of any group of people, but rather reflected his Christian beliefs, which he has been consistent with for 15 years.

“Nobody should mistreat anybody,” Cameron stressed.

“We all have our convictions formed by different things and mine are informed by my faith. They’re formed by the Word of God, and I found that to be an anchor for me, a compass and a guide for me. When people start bullying one another and calling each other names for those different convictions, then I think you get into problems,” he added.

“When you take a subject and reduce it to a four-second sound bite and a checkmark on a ballot, I think that’s inappropriate and insensitive,” Cameron told Curry, adding that such topics as homosexuality should be addressed in a private, personal discussion, not on national television.

Cameron also said he was surprised by the public outrage regarding his comments, as they are in line with his Christian beliefs.

“I was surprised, frankly, that people were surprised by the things that I’ve said,” he explained to Curry.

“I have been consistent for 15 years as a Christian. I’m a Bible-believing Christian. What I would have thought was more newsworthy is if I had said something that contradicted the Word of God, if I had contradicted my faith,” he noted.

Cameron also appeared on “Fox & Friends” Tuesday morning, telling host Steve Doocy that he felt Piers Morgan’s approach to the interview was “disingenuous.”

“What disheartens me … is that when you’re sitting across the table from someone who knows what your perspective is on issues – and I’ve been very consistent, I don’t think anything I said surprised anybody as a Bible-believing Christian – but to then take some answers, reduce an important and personal and sensitive issue to a four-second soundbite and toss it into a community to start a political firestorm and really upset people that you’re saying you’re looking to protect, I think it’s disingenuous,” Cameron told Doocy.

Amid this firestorm regarding Cameron’s comments, the real intention of his recent media appearances is to discuss and promote his new documentary, “Monumental,” which will play in select theaters across the nation for one night, on March 27.

The film documents Cameron as he traces the path of the forefathers in the founding of America in order to find the country’s “national treasure,” or the secret to America’s greatness.

NEWS: Pastor Tony Evans’ Son Booted From ‘The Voice;’ Blesses Fans

Anthony Evans, gospel artist and son of megachurch Pastor Dr. Tony Evans, was pitted against gospel artist Jesse Campbell in the battle round on the television show “The Voice” Monday night. However, Evans was sent home by mentor Christina Aguilera, causing many to speak about the impact that the performance had on them.

Evans and Campbell, both gospel singers, sang the Alicia Key’s song, “If I Ain’t Got You,” in the battle round of the competition that would eliminate one singer. The two men with similar styles both put on a performance that made even the song’s originator proud.

“Amazing performance,” Keys tweeted after the two men performed, hitting high notes and extravagant runs. “That was so fun to watch.”

Despite judges Cee Lo Green, Aguilera, Blake Shelton and Adam Levine complimenting both performers, only one gospel singer from the female judge’s team was allowed to move past the battle round. Although Aguilera did not choose Evans, the pastor’s son managed to bless many people who witnessed his performance.

“Your son blessed me last night on ‘The Voice,’” one person wrote on the pastor’s Facebook wall.

Another said they were now just as inspired by Anthony as they were by his father, who serves as the chaplain for the NBA’s Dallas Mavericks and NFL’s Dallas Cowboys.

“You have always been an inspiration to me,” another person wrote on the pastor’s Facebook wall. “Now your son is inspiring me as well! God bless the Evans family!”

The younger Evans took to his own social media page to thank fans who watched him during the competition, and joke about his feelings of regret.

“Thanks for all the love you guys…did my best,” Evans tweeted after the competition. “(I) Don’t have any regrets (except for Christina not saying ‘Anthony’) lol.” Aguilera took to her own Twitter page to speak about the hard decision of sending people home.

“Incredible performances in the Battles tonight,” Aguilera tweeted. “I had tough choices, so hard to send great singers home. They are forever team Xtina.”

NEWS: Pat Robertson Blames Tornado Victims, Says It’s Not God’s Fault

By Nicola Menzie , Christian Post Reporter

Pat Robertson, host of “The 700 Club,” said Monday during the program’s airing that God does not send tornadoes “to kill people” and that those affected by the deadly string of twisters in the Midwest and Southeast only had themselves to blame for living in tornado-prone areas.

Answering a viewer from Illinois as to why it is that “God sent the tornadoes,” Robertson was quick to respond that “God didn’t send tornadoes.”

The question, featured in the program’s “Bring It On” segment, in which the program invites “millions of viewers” to send in questions about “life, love, finances, morality, and what it means to be a Christian.”

As co-host Terry Meeuwsen listened, Robertson went on to provide a meteorological explanation as to why and how tornadoes occur.

“God doesn’t send tornadoes to hurt people,” the Christian Broadcasting Network founder said. “He doesn’t send – what you call ‘acts of God’ – but they’re not. So, all I can say is – why do you build houses in places where tornadoes are apt to happen?”

Meeuwsen suggested, however, “The bigger question for people spiritually is always…why didn’t He intervene?”

Robertson responded by speaking about prayer being able to “still storms” – as exemplified by Jesus in the Bible – before turning to offer a scientific explanation for hurricanes. He ended his commentary by repeating once more that people who suffer from natural disasters only had themeselves to blame for deciding to build houses “on the edge of an ocean.”

“It’s their fault, it’s not God’s,” Robertson concluded. “Don’t blame God for doing something foolish.”

The viewer who posed the question about God sending tornadoes revealed that he was from Illinois, which is one of the handful of states that saw a string of tornadoes and freakish weather over the past few days that has claimed at least 39 lives, including that of a 14-month-old girl. The little girl, from New Pekin, Ind., was initially found alive in a field after surviving the tornado, but later succumbed to her injuries. She also reportedly lost her mother, father and two siblings in the storm.

Kentucky, Ohio, Alabama and Georgia also experienced fatalities related to the tornadoes that struck last Friday. Recovery efforts were currently underway in those states, with faith-based organization Samaritan’s Purse working with a church in Charlotte, N.C., which also saw storms.

On Saturday, “The 700 Club” posted a link to Operation Blessing on its Facebook page, informing followers as to one of the ways in which they could aid tornado victims in Illinois.

One follower, Donovan White, responded to the Operation Blessing post on Monday, well after the “Bring It On” segment had aired, writing:

“Which is it Pat? This time around you said [G]od doesn’t cause tornadoes ‘it’s just nature’ but during Katrina and the Haiti earthquake you said they were being punished for being evil…you make it up as you go and no one seems to notice!”

Also addressing the string of deadly tornadoes Monday, Desiring God Ministries founder John Piper insisted that God indeed was responsible for the storms that had claimed dozens of lives.

Writing in a blog post titled “Fierce Tornadoes and the Fingers of God,” the theologian and pastor writes: “We do not ascribe such independent power to Mother Nature or to the devil. God alone has the last say in where and how the wind blows. If a tornado twists at 175 miles an hour and stays on the ground like a massive lawnmower for 50 miles, God gave the command.”

Piper wrote about the deadly storms as if they were sent by God as an act of judgment, and that those who survived should take it as a warning to turn from sin.

The Bethlehem Baptist Church pastor wrote, ”Therefore, God’s will for America under his mighty hand, is that every Christian, every Jew, every Muslim, every person of every religion or non-religion, turn from sin and come to Jesus Christ for forgiveness and eternal life. Jesus rules the wind. The tornadoes were his.

“But before Jesus took any life in rural America, he gave his own on the rugged cross. Come to me, he says, to America — to the devastated and to the smugly self-sufficient. Come to me, and I will give you hope and help now, and in the resurrection, more than you have ever lost.”

NEWS:Wyoming Advances ‘Doomsday Bill’ to Help Residents During Possible Collapse

NEWS:Wyoming Advances ‘Doomsday Bill’ to Help Residents During Possible Collapse

Over the past few years, economic woes have led to both fear and uncertainty. The Blaze already told you about what “preppers” are doing to ready themselves should disaster become reality. GBTV, too, has brought you “Independence USA,” a reality show featuring a family trying to live off the grid. But now it seems even some politicians are getting in on the preparatory spirit, with officials in the State of Wyoming advancing what many are calling a “Doomsday Bill.”

In the event that America’s political system or economic stability collapses, some Wyoming lawmakers contend that a viable plan must be in place. Enter Bill 85, which passed its first vote in the state’s House on Friday. If advanced, the “Doomsday Bill” would create a state-run government task force that would explore and handle energy supplies, food shortages and other needs related to a potential nationwide governmental collapse.

“The task force would include state lawmakers, the director of the Wyoming Department of Homeland Security, the Wyoming attorney general and the Wyoming National Guard’s adjutant general, among others,” reports Trib.com.

And here’s the kicker: If, indeed, such a horrific incident takes hold, Wyoming would potentially be able to issue its own currency — an action that would allow the state to isolate and self-contain, while continuing its commerce and operations. Additionally, WTOP.com reports that the proposed task force will examine the conditions under which the state government would need its own army, aircrafts and other materials.

While the state’s Department of Homeland Security already has a crisis management plan on the books, it doesn’t cover what would happen if a nationwide political or economic disruption or collapse takes form. In the past, at least six other states have attempted to create state currency; all have failed.

With Occupy Wall Street continuing to have a nation-wide presence and with the economy still on shaky ground, the bill’s sponsor, state Rep. David Miller (R-Riverton), sees the proposal as a common-sense move. That being said, Miller also contends that he doesn’t anticipate any catastrophic event in America in the near future. For him, the bill is more about protection in the case of a massive emergency.

“I don’t think there’s anyone in this room today [that] would come up here and say that this country is in good shape, that the world is stable and in good shape — because that is clearly not the case,” state Rep. Lorraine Quarberg (R-Thermopolis) said on Friday. “To put your head in the sand and think that nothing bad’s going to happen, and that we have no obligation to the citizens of the state of Wyoming to at least have the discussion, is not healthy.”

Before going to the Wyoming Senate, the bill must clear two more House votes. Originally, it called for $32,000 in state funds to be allocated to the task force; last week, this number was cut in half, which could make it a more palatable measure for lawmakers who are operating in cash-strapped times.

NEWS: Queen Latifah and Dolly Parton Duel in ‘Joyful Noise’ (Watch Trailer)

Posted on January 13, 2012 by P-Dub in NEWS VIDEOS No Comments
NEWS: Queen Latifah and Dolly Parton Duel in ‘Joyful Noise’ (Watch Trailer)

“Joyful Noise“ is a new musical that sings God’s praises loud and proud.

At first glance, it’s a film about the titanic catfight between two competing choir directors at a small Georgia church. Vi Rose Hill (played by Queen Latifah) has recently taken the reins of her congregation’s singers, a move that displeases G.G. Sparrow (played by Dolly Parton). The whole congregation is caught between a rock and a hard place when Sparrow, the former director’s widow, challenges Hill’s rule. The pair couldn’t wage war at a worse time – after all, the annual “Joyful Noise” choir competition is only months away.

The two divas differ on how their choir can best holler for the holy one come next year’s contest. Hill remains steadfast in her love of traditional Gospel standards, while Sparrow sees victory in turning contemporary song and dance to the choir’s advantage. To make matters worse, Hill’s daughter Olivia (portrayed by Keke Palmer) is falling for Sparrow’s troublemaking grandson Randy (played by Jeremy Jordan).

The growing gulf between the film’s leading ladies is what makes “Joyful Noise” justified family fun. Latifah and Parton’s characters cackle, plot, scratch and curse, reminding viewers that even the best among us are only human.

“I am who I am,” Sparrow stubbornly declares.

“Well, maybe you were … five procedures ago!” Hill retorts.

“Who cares if I’ve had a few nips and tucks?” Sparrow spits back. “God didn’t make plastic surgeons so they could starve!”

Though such a feud is often hilarious, it’s also heartfelt. Sparrow seeks to honor her deceased husband’s memory as their church’s choir director, while Hill merely wants to care for her daughter and her autistic son Walter. With so much at stake, only a miracle can make the two women sing in tune.

“Joyful Noise” makes no bones that Christ’s love leads the charge on that front. Inspired by his infatuation with Olivia, Randy returns to church and changes his life around. The teens soon become a couple, and their soaring duets seem like the final component the choir’s lacked all along. As their caretakers continue arguing, the pair’s passion rallies their community around praising Jesus in any way, shape or form.

This music-making gives “Joyful Noise” most of its magic. Olivia and Randy undergo radical transformations as they take their voices to new levels. The normally raucous Randy restrains his vocals and achieves new emotional depth, while Olivia overcomes her shyness and overwhelms him with a mighty roar she didn’t know she had. The other singers follow suit, and before long the battle between Sparrow and Hill is less about yelling at each other and more about trumpeting God’s glory before the world instead.

The film’s message is seemingly that faith should unite rather divide us. Regardless of how we sing, dance or pray, the praise we give is dedicated to the same divinity. Regardless of whether worshippers belt out the Gospel or whisper it instead, the most “Joyful Noise” of all remains joining together for the Lord.

“A Joyful Noise” is in theaters everywhere Jan. 13.
